June 15-17, 2011

On June 15-17, Climate Communities hosted the Local Clean Energy Leadership Summit, which convened the nation’s top city and county leaders to showcase successful local clean energy and sustainability initiatives using Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants (EECBG), share best practices and highlight the need for additional federal resources and support at the local government level.

March 4-5, 2011

On March 4-5, Climate Communities convened a small group of local government and private sector thought-leaders in Washington, DC, to finalize a 2011 strategy and game plan to (1) protect existing federal clean energy / sustainability resources (e.g., EPA Climate Showcase Communities, HUD Sustainable Communities, DOT TIGER) and (2) create new opportunities for cities and counties to seek federal support for local energy efficiency/renewable energy/sustainability projects (e.g., DOE EECBG and other competitive grants).

December 6-10, 2010

Between December 6-10, Climate Communities organized an “Energy Block Grant Action Week” and encouraging local government leaders to help us win FY 2012 funding for the EECBG program.  Energy Block Grant Action Week kicked-off with a national webinar highlighting the effectiveness of the EECBG program, showcasing local government initiatives that have reduced energy use, cut greenhouse gas emissions and created jobs.

July 29, 2010

Climate Communities launched its Energy Block Grants Work! campaign with senior level meetings in Washington, DC, with DOE Assistant Secretary Cathy Zoi, OMB Associate Director Sally Ericsson and Members of Congress. For more details, visit www.energyblockgrants.org.

May 24-26, 2010

On May 24-26, 2010, Climate Communities hosted the second annual Local Clean Energy / Climate Leadership Summit in Washington, DC.  The purpose of the summit was to continue to build the partnership between local communities and the federal government with a focus on developing additional federal tools and resources to empower local climate action.  City and county leaders from across America:

  • Met with key Obama Administration, Congressional and federal agency decision-makers;
  • Helped develop federal policies that support your local clean energy and climate initiatives; and
  • Networked with peers from across the country.

March 10, 2010

On March 10, 2010, Climate Communities hosted “County Clean Energy Action Day on Capitol Hill.”  County elected leaders joined Climate Communities to demonstrate to Congress the critical role of local governments in promoting green buildings, increasing public transit and cleaner vehicles and fuels, fostering community-scale renewables, building green infrastructure, and creating green jobs and businesses.

November 16-18, 2009

On November 16-18, 2009, Climate Communities and ICLEI USA convened the nation’s leading city and county leaders in Washington, DC for Local Climate Action Week.  Local Climate Action Week provided opportunities for mayors, county executives, council members, and other community leaders to meet with key federal policymakers and build the federal-local partnership to reduce energy consumption, decrease greenhouse gas emissions and create millions of new clean energy jobs.

December 8-15, 2008

Between December 8-15, Climate Communities worked with city and county leaders across America to host local media events during “Local Climate Action Week” and help release the Empowering Local Government Climate Action: Blueprint for President Obama and 111th Congress.  These media events reinforced our message about local government’s critical climate change role.  Our goal was to generate local and national press coverage that will help build momentum for our Blueprint recommendations.  Click here for more information.

September 14-16, 2008

April 8-10, 2008
Climate Communities hosted the first Local Government Climate Protection Summit in Washington, DC, that convened approximately 75 city and county leaders.  Participants demonstrated the importance of local leadership in the national effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, gained media attention for their climate change initiatives, and met with key Congressional and federal agency decision makers to shape future climate change policies.

A group of communities including Sacramento County (CA), Carroll County (MD), Montgomery County (MD), King County (WA), and Snohomish County (WA) met with key leaders on Capitol Hill to introduce the Climate Communities federal action agenda.
